or i guess, what i just finished reading. figured i'd start sharing what i've been leafing through since it's such a big part of what i do. just finished these two great books: "the death of mr. baltisberger" by bohumil hrabal, and "atlantic" by simon winchester.
the hrabal book is a collection of short stories of his. some of them are better than others. on the whole i really enjoyed it though. i'm a big fan of czech writers. hrabal is who wrote the book "closely watched trains", that got turned into probably one of the best movies i've ever seen. definitely recommend it.
the book "atlantic" was also a good read. it's a pretty well woven narrative of the history of human interaction with the atlantic ocean. i have a big fascination with atlantic stories and lore so it was nice to have a bit of an overarching background to fill in some blanks for me. to be sure it's more of a boutiquey history book than dry and scholarly, but it's pretty enjoyable. i'm trying to work in more nautical themes into my new songs, so this was definitely a good place to hit for some direction.
since i finished these i'm scouring our bookshelves for new books to read.
